Quick Regulations for Wearing Graduation Gowns by Phoenix Delray

There are a lot of different factors that determine the kind of graduation gowns that are worn by graduates such as the college major that has been earned, the grade level that has been completed, the school colors, and any honors or distinctions that the student has earned during their studies. Commencement attire is different for schools not only around the country, but around the world as well.

In the United States, Bachelors and Masters graduation gowns are similar to their counterparts in England. The Bachelors gowns are worn closed in the front, usually by a zipper, and are at least mid calf length to ankle length. Masters graduation gowns have sleeves that are oblong and, although the base of the sleeve hangs down in the usual way, it is square cut in behind to create the oblong shape. The fronts of the graduation gowns are shaped like an arc that is cut away and there is a slit for the wrist opening, but the rest of the arc of the graduation gowns is closed.

This shape of the graduation gowns goes along with the square cut liripipe that is worn with many academic hoods. The Masters graduation gowns are designed to be worn either open or closed in the front, and are worn usually with the traditional mortar boards and tassels. It usually depends on the school traditions, rules, and regulations as to which are worn open and which are worn closed in the front.

These graduation gowns have full sleeves instead of the bell sleeves of the bachelors gowns. Some doctorate graduation gowns will leave exposed a cravat or a necktie when they are closed, and other doctorate graduation gowns look almost like a cape and are much more closed up. These doctorate graduation gowns are designed like the Masters graduation gowns to be worn either open or closed.

Doctoral graduation gowns are usually black, but some schools do use gowns in the schools colors. The Code for these graduation gowns says that the outside shell of the hood should remain black if the schools colors are used. For the most part, doctoral graduation gowns are similar to the bachelors gowns, but have three velvet bands on the sleeves, and also velvet facing that runs down the front of the graduation gowns. There are certain colors that are designated for the fields of study in which the doctorate was earned, so the velvet facing should usually be tinted with the color of that field. In addition, there are many more rules that govern how graduation gowns are worn, with a long list of separate rules for faculty members.
